Le Mile end s'articule 2019: 25 May - 8 June
Outdoor community arts festival
DAY 1:
Amanda Ruiz : I'm a Map on the Sand
Location: Saint Michel Park (ave Laurier + ave Saint-Dominique)
*in case of rain, will be held the day after
I’m a Map on the Sand will be held in the sandy area of Parc Saint-Michel. It will use mapping as a storytelling device to represent journeys of migrant workers working in the Mile-End neighbourhood. Participants will describe their homes and homelands as they incorporate objects (plants, flowers, seeds, etc.) within their silhouettes drawn into the sand. Different textures, colours and smells will represent aspects of their various living spaces in their everyday lives, or in their memories. Mapping will therefore provide an experience of traveling within the limits of their own bodies. This map will represent a territory and a body informed by the participants’ narratives, relating notions of home, homeland and the body as an individual and collective entity.
Amanda Ruiz-Méndez is a Mexican artist based in Montreal. She studied Architecture at UNAM, Mexico, and holds a master in Fine Arts at Concordia University. Her work incorporates different modes of collectiveness, from art and craft teaching to participatory performances and activism. She considers mobilization as a fundamentally creative process.
-------
Le Mile End s’articule is an outdoor community arts festival that brings articule out of the gallery walls and into our shared streets and parks. The 2019 edition revolves around themes of memory and storytelling. Which stories do we share? Where are they told? How do stories inform our experience and understanding of a space, and what are the inventions and transformations we imagine? Given the history of Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal and the various communities that share the Mile End in particular, the festival presents creative and critical responses.
All events are free and open to all!
