« Je voudrais souligner un élément de l’héritage historique du Québec contemporain et une possible menace à son avenir : il s’agit du danger d’intolérance toujours présent parmi nous. » - Guy Rocher, Le Québec en mutation, 1973.
(Let me stress one element of the historical heritage of contemporary Quebec and a possible threat to its future: it is the danger of intolerance still present among us.) [freely translated to English]

In 1973, the eminent Quebecker sociologist Guy Rocher published Le Québec en mutation. This book, a classic work addressing the changes in Quebec society at that time, contains a short chapter entitled “La menace d’intolérance” (the threat of intolerance). This brief text, in 1973, reveals the menace of intolerance in the future of Quebec, thus anticipating the recent debates on Reasonable Accommodations and the Charter of Values.

The objective of the workshop is to reflect on the notion of intolerance while creating a crossword puzzle. The first part of the workshop will consist of the reading of Guy Rocher’s text. This will be followed by a short discussion and the co-creation of a list of 15 to 30 keywords with definitions or clues. These will serve to produce the crossword puzzle.

Over a period of about two hours and a half, 6 to 10 participants and crosswords aficionado will collaborate in creating a crossword puzzle. We encourage you to register in advance via outreach@articule.org or the Sign-up option on this page.

This workshop will be held as part of Dominique Fontaine’s curatorial research residency: Scènes de la vie quotidienne à Montréal (on belonging and the politics of belonging).

The workshop will be in French only.
