MONTRÉAL MONOCHROME IV: STUDY HALL

We are delighted to announce that the 4th edition of Montréal Monochrome will be held April 21-23, 2016 at articule and elsewhere throughout Montreal. MONTRÉAL MONOCHROME IV: STUDY HALL offers a framework to explore how artistic modes of production can challenge conventional systems of education. It will be an opportunity to actively exchange knowledges on alternative, misrepresented and marginalized ways of learning and unlearning. The theme of this edition signals a concern with questions about conventional forms and spaces of education, and its intersection with other practices and other modes of cultural production. It indicates a growing interest in a body of artistic production that engages with knowledge production and sites of resistance. By and large, MONTRÉAL MONOCHROME IV: STUDY HALL is an attempt to critically respond to institutionalized education that perpetuates systemic oppression.

We invite proposals from people of all practices and backgrounds for group activities to be led and developed over the course of three days. These could be workshops, interactive roundtable discussions, collective artworks, open mics, events in public spaces, interventions, performances, protests, pop-up actions or other, to take place at articule and in other parts of the city. MONTRÉAL MONOCHROME IV seeks proposals that not only offer clear, unique and innovative perspectives on study and knowledge production, but also participate in the “disruption of colonial meta-narrative.”* We encourage open-ended ideas that foster group collaboration.

TOPICS COULD INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Indigenous pedagogies and methodologies. The unlearning of our internalized prejudices. The intersection of art and pedagogy with an anticolonial inflection. Art as pedagogy. Art as a mode of knowledge production. The studious artist. Learning by art-making. Art/pedagogical practices devoted to political and social transformation. The pedagogical responsibility of art spaces. How can art practices redefine our understanding of knowledge production? How alternative ways of learning can challenge preconceived notions of the work and the value of art? The artist’s studio and its pedagogical activity. Study vs. the consumption of institutional education.

PROPOSALS MUST INCLUDE:

●    A brief 250-300 word summary of your idea.
●    A title for your activity.
●    A list of technical requirements (if available).
●    One paragraph including information about you and your work. Feel free to include website links or relevant documentation if available.

ORGANIZERS

The Fabulous Committee’s mandate is to develop anti-oppression strategies to make articule more inclusive and culturally diverse, at both the level of programming and the centre’s internal structure (members, Board of Directors, staff). This includes the organization of special events like Montréal Monochrome, an annual event which aims to address the underrepresentation and systemic oppression of marginalized groups in Montréal’s art milieu.

articule is an open-access artist-run centre dedicated to the presentation of a broad range of contemporary art practices. Through our various programming channels, we strive for artistic rigour, interdisciplinarity and social engagement. While special consideration is given to emerging artists, we also respect those who have already established important precedents, who continue to test the limits of aesthetic gesture, and who commit themselves to the ideals of experimentation and risk-taking. articule supports discursive and alternative activities that promote dialogue and build networks with local, national and international artists, collectives and organizations. Our open structure encourages the direct participation of an active and diverse membership on both programming and organisational levels.
