While the year 2017 is the occasion for numerous celebrations across the country, such as the 375th anniversary of the City of Montreal, articule wishes to engage a reflection on the act of commemoration, the history and sociopolitical context of Montreal / Tiotia:ke, as well as the subterranean and marginal aspects of the city erased from the official narrative of the festivities.
The 2017 Members’ Exhibition proposes that we imagine articule’s 375th anniversary. In order to propulse ourselves into the future, articule offers a launching platform to its members from which to imagine their practice in the future and reflect more widely on the development of the city and its many cultural scenes.
Through the playful, judicious, hypothetical, critical and lucid propositions of nine of articule’s member-artists, the exhibition will take the form of a laboratory of potentials anchored in a space and time where celebration, nostalgia, speculation, futurology and uncertainty coexist.
Join us for the exhibition opening on June 2nd as we toast articule in the year 2356, with food, future-cocktails, and more!

Sophia Borowska (b. 1993) is a Montréal-based artist and researcher working in fibres, sculpture, and installation. Her work harnesses the evocative powers of material and process to create spaces that propose an embodied and haptic – rather than detached and visual – mode of experience. Julie Laurin + Jonathan M Roy have been a couple for more than 15 years. Julie is an interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, performance and installation and Jonathan is a videographer, photographer and musician. Their artistic collaboration stems from their travels in the United States and Europe, spontaneously planned as several months of flânerie. Their collective work is the combination of free research of historical and on-the-field elements transformed by their shared imagination.
Yen-Chao Lin is a Taipei born, Montreal based multidisciplinary artist, self-described postmodern archivist, and natural history enthusiast. Her works are often inspired by oral histories, family archives, folk religion practices, as well as recurring hauntological themes. Lin holds a BFA from Concordia University with a major in film production.
Kevin Yuen Kit Lo is a graphic designer, educator, community organizer, and sometimes artist. He runs the design and communications studio LOKI, working at the intersection of graphic design and social change.
Katerina Pansera is an artist from Montréal who studied at Concordia University and at the École nationale supérieure d’art de Nancy. Through her work she investigates ideas related to spectacle, setting, and fantasy narrative. She is particularly interested in the state of contemporary painting and can be heard on Radio CKUT 90.3 FM talking about visual art. In 2015 she founded the deGaspé Nanoresidency out of her studio.
Hannah Strauss is currently pursuing her Masters in Fine Arts in Print Media at Concordia University, Montréal. Born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, she lived for several years in Hamilton, Ontario, and more recently called Los Angeles home. She works primarily between drawing, printmaking, and installation.

Some of her inspirations are: everyday life, Dada, surrealism and personal memories. Since immigrating to Canada, she has developed interactive performances and installations. In the field of visual arts, she makes collages and assemblages and re-uses found materials or objects.
