Habiter l'école et ses habitants  Julie Laurin (Montreal)
11 Jun 2015 to 14 Jun 2015

articule has the great pleasure of collaborating with artist Julie Laurin as part of her project Habiter l’école et ses habitants, which includes an artist residency within the school system. Her residency is taking place at École Jean-Baptiste Meilleur, in the Centre-Sud neighborhood of the City of Montreal, as part of the initiative Libres comme l’art, financed by the Conseil des arts de Montréal (CAM), the Conférence régionale des élus (CRÉ) de Montréal and the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport via its program Une école montréalaise pour tous.

From now until the end of the school year, Julie Laurin will be meeting 3rd year students on a weekly basis and will be exploring the space of her residency. Throughout this process, she will be collaborating with homeroom teacher Marie-Chantal Métellus and arts teacher Hélène Jolin. As well, artists Jean-Philippe Luckhurst-Cartier and Nicole Panneton will be invited to do a performance in front of the students during the residency.

Habiter l’école et ses habitants is an exploration-based co-creation between the artists and the students of which the results are unknown. Together, they will explore their capacity to create with what surrounds them within a school context. Their creations will be presented as part of an exhibition at articule from June 11 to 14, 2015. The artist wishes to immerse herself in the life of the child who is confronted with the adult ways of doing. In a place conceived for them and geared towards education, what are some of the changes that they would bring to their school?

Julie Laurin is an active member of articule. She participates in several committees, including serving as Treasurer of the Board of Directors since October 2014. Montreal-based artist born in 1985, Julie Laurin is an interdisciplinary artist working with sculpture and performance. She is interested in any theory or observation about the relationship between man and his habitat. She completed a BFA in sculpture at Concordia University in 2011, with specific interests in both matter and the invisible. She is currently completing a graduate degree in Arts Management at HEC Montreal. Laurin has been studying performance art since 2013 and presented various performances in Quebec as well as exhibited her work in Quebec and in Europe.
