In both his work and artistic practice, Mathieu Cardin perpetually sits on the fence between reality and fiction, real and make-believe. He transforms gallery spaces into places of consumption, guiding the viewer to meander in a fictitious place, forcing them to question the boundaries between what they believe to be an illusion and where to find what is truly real.

For the exhibition Reality Check, Cardin hides an unusual room, an accident, behind a photography exhibit. The proposed location will play with our impulses when faced with an ordinary but problematic situation. articule will become a narrative space for a wacky mise-en-scène: without revealing the surprise behind the walls, Reality Check focuses on the behind-the-scenes, the room where we are not invited, behind the line that we cannot cross.

 

Mathieu Cardin lives and works in Montreal. He holds a masters in Studio Arts from Concordia University (2015) and a BA in Visual Arts from Université du Québec en Outaouais (2008). He recently had solo exhibitions at galerie B-312 (2016), Écart (2015), the Centre d'exposition L'imagier (2014), Centre Regart (2014) and AXENEO7 (2009). His work will be presented at Circa in 2017. Recipient of the exchange programme between La Chambre Blanche and Rad'Art, he will participate in a six week residency followed by an exhibition at the Italian art centre in June 2016. His work has also been presented in France, Mexico and the United States.
