WORLD CUP!
Curated by Amber Berson, WORLD CUP! encourages citizens to engage critically and playfully with the game of soccer and acts as a vehicle for discussions about sports, community, patriotism and national identity. The exhibition features the works of Onyeka Igwe (single-channel video), Sheena Hoszko (stained glass), arkadi lavoie lachapelle (durational performance/installation), and Null Ace (video game/installation). Held concurrently with the 2018 World Cup games (June 14 - July 15, in Russia), WORLD CUP! will also host a series of artist talks during participatory soccer matches.
Amber Berson is a writer, curator, and PhD student conducting doctoral research at Queen’s University on artist-run culture and feminist, utopian thinking. Her writing has been published in Breach Magazine, Canadian Art, C Magazine, Revue .dpi, esse, Fuse Magazine and the St Andrews Journal of Art History and Museum Studies.
Onyeka Igwe is an artist, filmmaker, programmer, and researcher living and working in London, UK. Onyeka's works have shown at the ICA; Nuit Blanche, Toronto; The Showroom Gallery, London; Internationale Kurtzfilmtage Wintherthur, Edinburgh Artist Moving Image, and Hamburg film festivals.
Sheena Hoszko is a sculptor, anti-prison organizer, and settler living and working in Tio'tia:ke (Montréal), in Kanien'kehá:ka territory. Selected exhibitions include Centre Clark and La Centrale (Montreal), A Space (Toronto), Artspace (Peterborough), The New Gallery (Calgary), and Blackwood Gallery (Mississauga). Upcoming projects include a talk at the Queens Museum (NYC) as part of Open Engagement, and a sculptural work to be presented at the Musée d'art de Joliette (QC). She is also an avid sci-fi fan.
Born in 1989, arkadi lavoie lachapelle is influenced by her years as a AAA soccer player, the collective energy of the 2012 student movement, the complexity of intersectional feminism, and a deep spiritual experience. Since 2010 her artistic ventures, sometimes anonymous and clandestine, have happened in Canada, as well as in small and large Russian and European cities. She currently sits on the board of VIVA! Art Action and collaborates with Journée sans culture.
Null Ace is an intermedia artist interested in how the politics of play unite the individual with the collective. His work seeks to illuminate connections between facets of culture and their inseparable relationship with dynamics of power.
